Qld: Lawyers expected to apply for bail tomorrow
Lawyers for a man charged over the headache pill company extortions are expected to
apply to the Supreme Court tomorrow to have him released from custody.
DENNIS DONALD FOUNTAIN, aged 62, of Kirkdale Road, Chapel Hill, in Brisbane's west,
spent last night behind bars after appearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on 10 charges
including extortion and attempted murder.
He's accused of extortion attempts against Panadol manufacturer SmithKline Beecham
and Herron Pharmaceuticals.
Magistrate CHRIS OWENS refused bail on the grounds he was a risk of committing further
offences and endangering the safety of others.
Defence lawyers say they'll take a bail application to the Supreme Court which is expected
to be heard tomorrow.
Prosecutor DAVID MEREDITH yesterday described the case against FOUNTAIN, who was not
required to enter a plea, as a strong one.
Mr MEREDITH says police have a statement from a registered informant saying he innocently
supplied FOUNTAIN with strychnine 18 months ago.
Both FOUNTAIN and his wife, JANE, were treated in hospital with apparent strychnine
poisoning in June this year.
