NSW: Rudd says flu outbreak puts spotlight on quarantining
SYDNEY, Aug 27 AAP - Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd has called for an independent inquiry
into Australia's quarantine procedures following the outbreak of equine influenza (EI)
authorities are struggling to contain.
Mr Rudd said Australia needed to know how the outbreak had occurred.
"I believe there needs to be an urgent and independent inquiry as to whether there
has been any breakdown in Australia's quarantine procedures, because the impact for Australia's
equine industry is so huge," Mr Rudd told reporters.
He said the opposition would examine any submissions made to state and territory governments
about forms of assistance to the industry.
