Tas: Brown says Greens will peak up seats in Tassie election

SYDNEY, Feb 17 AAP - Federal Greens leader Bob Brown believes his party will pick up
seats at the Tasmanian election.

Tasmanian Labor Premier Paul Lennon is expected to call an election today for March 18.

Senator Brown, a former member of the Tasmanian parliament, said he believed the ranks
of the four Greens MPs in the lower house would be swelled at the election.

He took a swipe at Labor and the Liberal Party for refusing to agree to work with the
Greens in minority government if, as is widely expected, neither major party wins a majority
of seats at the poll.

"The Greens have got the runs on the board, they've got great candidates, they will
pick up seats," he said.

"And they're the only party who are saying they'll respect the vote of the Tasmanian
people and work in a minority government situation if that's what the Tasmanian people
vote for.

"The arrogant old parties say they won't have that."

FED:Thousands freed from high fixed-rate loan

More than 100-thousand homeowners will be sighing with relief .. that their three-year
fixed-rate mortgage has run its course.

This group would have taken on their loan at a rate of more than eight per cent ..

missing out on the sharp cut in interest rates by the Reserve Bank during the heat of
the global financial crisis.

Mortgage broker Loan Market says many of these borrowers are now looking to get a lower
interest rate.

Loan Market chief operating officer DEAN RUSHTON says while the cash rate's crept back
to 4.25 per cent .. from a near record low of three per cent .. it's still well below
the level for a fixed-rate loan taken out in 2007/08.

Fed: People smuggling 'out of control' - UN official

SYDNEY, April 9 AAP - Governments need new solutions to deal with "out of control"

people-smuggling as thousands of asylum seekers try to reach Australia via Indonesia,
a top United Nations official says.

Manuel Jordao, a senior representative of The United Nations High Commission for Refugees
in Indonesia, says a large number of almost 4000 asylum seekers on the UNHCR's books in
the archipelago will try to reach Australia by boat, rather than wait for resettlement
via official channels.

"It's a big business out there," Mr Jordano said in The Sydney Morning Herald on Friday.

"It's totally out of control and what we are proposing is that the states in the region
are being outmanoeuvred by the trafficking syndicates."

He said new solutions were required by governments across the region, and called on
them to "get their act together".

FED: PNG crash bodies returned to Australia

EDS: Please note clarifies there were three PNG nationals on board the Airlines PNG
plane, instead two as sent earlier

BRISBANE, Aug 26 AAP - The bodies of nine Australians who died in a plane crash near
the Kokoda Track have arrived at Brisbane airport.

Before dawn on Wednesday, Papua New Guinea police escorted three funeral-home mini
vans to the Port Moresby airport so that the bodies of seven Victorians and two Queenslanders
on board the doomed charter flight en route to Kokoda could be laid to rest in their respective
homes.

Funeral officials began taking the bodies of the two Queenslanders, Dr June Canavan
and Keith Gracie, off the aircraft just after noon.

The remaining bodies will be transported to Melbourne later on Wednesday.

Dr Canavan, 59, a sports medicine specialist from Maroochydore on Queensland's Sunshine
Coast, was raising money for a school in Tanzania.

Her friend Mr Gracie, 54, a construction company owner, was lending her his support
and fulfilling a long-held "dream" to walk the track.

Dr Canavan's partner Anne Gripper told AAP they had met nine years ago when she was
competing in a triathlon in Switzerland.

"She was a fantastic person - it would've been hard for me to ever find a better partner,"

Ms Gripper said.

"We shared a love of many things, especially sport - both participating and watching.

"We also loved the performing arts and travel, especially adventure travel.

"It's going to be huge hole for me not having her companionship."

A memorial service for Dr Canavan will be held at the Sunshine Coast University on August 31.

The Mooloolaba Surf Club will host a service for Mr Gracie this Friday.

An Airlines PNG flight carrying two PNG pilots, nine Australians, a Japanese national
and a PNG national crashed into the Owen Stanley Ranges about 1.5km north of the PNG village
of Isurava at an altitude of 5,500 feet (1,650m) two weeks ago.

On board were nine Australians making the pilgrimage to hike the Kokoda Track, where
600 Aussie diggers died fighting Japanese forces.

Australian and PNG officials spent several days in the dense jungle piecing together
remains and clues as to what went wrong.

A report on the cause of the crash was expected in mid-September.

NSW: Sonny Bill Williams snubs Supreme Court

SYDNEY, Aug 8 AAP - Sonny Bill Williams has snubbed court proceedings against him,
just hours before he is scheduled to play his first match in France.

A small army of barristers representing the Bulldogs rugby league club and the NRL
have massed today at the NSW Supreme Court in Sydney to argue for an injunction to prevent
the runaway rugby league star playing rugby union in France.

But no lawyer for Williams was at the court.

It is the third no-show by Williams or his legal representatives in the past two weeks,
after he left the Bulldogs for a more lucrative contract with the Toulon club.

Justice Robert Austin granted leave in a brief hearing this morning for the Bulldogs
and the NRL to argue for the injunction in the absence of Williams.

If they are successful, Williams will be in contempt of court if he proceeds to play
in a friendly match for Toulon, which begins early Saturday morning Sydney time.

The NSW Supreme Court will reconvene at 11am (AEST) to hear the plaintiff's arguments
for the injunction.

Qld: State's pubs put on notice

BRISBANE, Feb 14 AAP - The Queensland government has declared a crackdown on all pubs
and clubs that allow violence and serve alcohol to drunken patrons.

Premier Anna Bligh will meet with 19 indigenous mayors in Cairns tomorrow as part of
the government's push to tackle alcohol abuse.

But Treasurer Andrew Fraser today warned all operators of licensed premises they faced
stiff penalties, including the suspension of their liquor licences, if they failed to
meet their obligations.

"The Bligh government will crack down on any licensed premises that do not meet their
obligations for responsible service, no matter where they are," Mr Fraser said.

The warning came as one of Brisbane's most popular hotels, the Normanby Hotel in the
city's inner-west, was yesterday slapped with a breach notice after more than 50 incidents
in the past year involving violent behaviour among patrons and high levels of intoxication.

The newly refurbished hotel, popular with young drinkers on weekends, faces a cutback
in its trading hours, a suspension of its licence and large fines as a result of the notice.

The owners may also be forced to stop selling jugs of alcohol and using the hotel's
car park as a bar area.

Meanwhile, Mr Fraser today tabled draft legislation in parliament which sets out a
comprehensive overhaul of Queensland's Liquor Act.

The changes will affect late-night operating hours for licensed premises, wind back
early opening, and create a new licence for small, boutique bars.

Fed: Defence force ignored call for safety upgrades, inquiry told

AAP General News (Australia)

Fed: Defence force ignored call for safety upgrades, inquiry told

By Adam Gartrell

SYDNEY, Feb 14 AAP - The defence force chose to "accept the risk" posed by unsafe seats
on its Sea King helicopters, ignoring calls for an upgrade that may have saved the lives
of those killed in a crash in Indonesia, an inquiry was told today.

Nine Australian service personnel were killed and another two injured when the Shark02
helicopter crashed on the remote Indonesian island of Nias during a mercy mission last
April.

The 30-year-old chopper was taking medical aid to the island in the wake of the 2004
Boxing Day tsunami and a later earthquake.

Just 20 metres above the ground, it "nosed over" and crashed into a soccer field before
flipping and bursting into flames.

A defence board inquiry into the crash was today told the Shark02's passenger seats
were fitted with standard lap belts which were not designed to protect wearers in the
event of a crash.

This was despite a recommendation stemming from a previous defence board inquiry into
a 1995 Sea King crash at Bamaga in northern Queensland, which called for upgraded seats
fitted with shoulder harnesses.

In an address to the board today, a member of the counsel assisting team, Lieutenant
Matthew Vesper, said the seats had been identified after the Bamaga crash as "lacking
suitable crash resistance".

But Mr Vesper said that over the course of eight years the Bamaga recommendation was
"effectively abandoned".

The defence force temporarily stopped flying passengers in its Sea Kings in 1999 as
a result of the safety concerns, but resumed again in December 2003 without upgrading
the seating, he said.

Director General Technical Airworthiness, Air Commodore Noel Schmidt, after conducting
a safety review into the aircraft in September 2003, wrote to the navy: "New seats would
be expensive and difficult to install. Possible reductions in capability. Accept risk."

Lt Vesper said the failure to provide adequate seating had resulted in "a significant
deficiency in occupant survivability".

Army Major Douglas Randell, who headed the Aircraft Accident Investigation Team which
looked into the Nias disaster, today told the board he believed shoulder harnesses would
have improved the chances of survival for those onboard Shark02.

The seating was inadequate and failed in crash survivability standards, he said.

Maj Randell also said the Sea Kings should be fitted with "crashworthy fuel systems"

designed to contain fuel and oils in the event of a crash, thus minimising the risk of
fire.

The installation of such a system would also have improved the chances of survival
for those aboard Shark02, he said.

The US defence force has retrofitted its choppers with the systems, and have recorded
a dramatic reduction in crashes resulting in fires and fire-related crash fatalities,
he said.

asylum migration

asylum migration The international movement of refugees and persons who, while having suffered generalized repression, violence, and poverty, do not qualify as refugees under the strict requirements of the 1976 UN protocol. Currently, the only option for non‐EU nationals unable to use the family reunion scheme, but wishing to migrate to the EU is to claim asylum.

‘The total number of asylum applications, including dependants, to EU countries has remained relatively steady since 1999. As well as the United Kingdom, Belgium, Finland, the Irish Republic, Italy and the Netherlands each recorded a fall in applications between 2000 and 2001. Applications to Belgium and Italy, for example, almost halved, while applications to Austria increased by 65 per cent and to France by 22 per cent. In 2001 the United Kingdom received more asylum applications than any other EU country, closely followed by Germany. However, when the relative size of the countries' populations are taken into account, by looking at the number of asylum seekers per 1,000 population, the United Kingdom ranks joint seventh with Luxembourg. Austria has the highest rate at 3.7 asylum seekers per 1,000 population, while Portugal has the lowest, at less than 0.1 per 1,000 population’ (National Office of Statistics, Social Trends 33
).

Throughout the EU, there are marked differences in the place of origin of asylum seekers; refugees tend to join existing communities. The small size of the Yugoslav community in France (most of whom came from Serbia) mitigated against France taking in many refugees from the former Yugoslavia (Morokvasic, in M. Morokvasic and E. Hedwig (eds.) 1994). Rates of acceptance of asylum seekers are closely tied to the foreign policy of the receiving state; for example, in 1997, 66% of applicants from the former Yugoslavia were successful in the UK, as opposed to 23% in France.

More men claim asylum, as individuals, than women, but women often dominate in offical refugee programmes, as in Bosnia and Kosovo. Upon acceptance, men tend to be employed in the formal sector of the economy, while women are more likely to obtain work in the informal sector, often because of their status as dependants in family migration ( E. Kofman, in Fincher and Jacobs (eds.) 1998).

The 1999 UK Asylum Bill restricted the rights of asylum seekers, replacing vouchers for cash payments for subsistence, and forcibly dispersing asylum seekers throughout the country, away from Greater London and the south‐east.

The United Nations High Commissioner for refugees estimates that half the claims for political asylum in Europe are fraudulent and the pressure of increasing numbers of false claims has forced receiving governments into a more hardhearted attitude; only 4% of the claims made in Germany in 1990 were accepted as genuine, for example.

OSCE expresses concern over restrictions on the internet.

The Internet should remain free and access should

be considered a human right, the Representative of Freedom of the Media in the

Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Dunja Mijatovic said

on Friday.

At OSCE headquarters and during a presentation here, the 225-page report

submitted by Mijatovic expressed concern about the level of blocking practices

encountered in some of the 56 states of the Organization for Security and

Cooperation in Europe.

The report also noted that Turkey has decided to introduce a mandatory

Internet filtering system effective next August 22nd.

It said this would be the first such restriction within the OSCE region,

which encompasses Europe, Russia, North America and central Asian states.

However, the study was commissioned by the office of the Representative and

authored by Yaman Akdeniz, a professor at Istanbul Bilgi University who

measured the level of Internet content regulation in the OSCE area and

assesses national laws in light of OSCE commitments and international

standards of free expression and access to information.

The Study on legal provisions and practices related to freedom of

expression, the free flow of information and media pluralism on the Internet

is the first ever OSCE-wide review of laws regulating the Internet.

Mijatovic said the rapid development of Internet technologies and growth in

user numbers were factors that inspired the report, which offers

recommendations on how to keep the Internet open.

"We will use the study as an advocacy tool to promote speech-friendly

Internet regulation in the OSCE participating States," Mijatovic said.

"Some governments already recognize access to the Internet as a human right.

This trend should be supported as a crucial element of media freedom in the

21st century," Mijatovic added.

The study found that some participating States had problems submitting

information for the study because legal provisions or relevant statistics were

not easily retrievable.

It also emphasizes that this lack of clarity makes it difficult for users

to understand Internet regulation regimes.

Akdeniz expressed concern about the level of blocking practices encountered

in the OSCE region.

"Restrictions to freedom of expression must comply with international

norms. No compliance could lead to censorship," he added.

A study published this week by ITG's Majestic Market Research revealed that Novartis' recently approved drug, Gilenya, continues to steal share from market leaders in the multiple sclerosis (MS) market, and uptake is expected to increase significantly over the next year. Gilenya came onto the market in late September 2010 as the first FDA-approved oral disease-modifying MS drug. Despite negative sentiment around Gilenya's lengthy initiation process, neurologists are embracing the new drug at an impressive rate. Real time data from ITG's proprietary physician panel indicate that Gilenya was the disease-modifying treatment of choice for 20% of new written MS prescriptions in April. Furthermore, surveyed neurologists indicated that their prescribing of Gilenya will increase significantly over the course of 2011 as they continue to shift inadequate responders from other MS therapies to the new drug (see also Multiple Sclerosis).

The study takes an in-depth look at how Gilenya's multi-step initiation process is impacting neurologists' use of the drug. According to neurologists, new treatment starts for Gilenya typically take between three to six weeks and involve the scheduling and organization of prescreening tests and ongoing monitoring for adverse events.

Physicians reported that Novartisplays an important role in facilitating these steps. In fact, 63% of Gilenya prescribers indicated that they receive support from Novartis during this process, and 25% of them classified this assistance as superior to what competing companies offer for their products.

By comparison, neurologists appear unable to get over similar concerns about Acorda Therapeutics' Ampyra, which was launched in March 2010 as the first FDA approved drug to improve walking in MS patients. Like Gilenya, Ampyra is associated with an onerous initiation process. Neurologists described an overwhelming degree of red tape affiliated with the reimbursement of Ampyra. Of surveyed Ampyra prescribers, 40% reported reimbursement issues with the drug. Unlike Gilenya, Ampyra's launch appears to be greatly hindered by these issues. Since neurologists view Ampyra's efficacy as questionable and limited to a niche subset of the MS population, they seem less willing to jump through hoops to get patients on it. The difference in how neurologists are handling Gilenya versus Ampyra is indicative of the cost-benefit analysis that is inherent in every treatment decision. Neurologists have made more of a commitment to Gilenya because they believe it can deliver meaningful benefits to their patients and Novartis is facilitating the delivery of those benefits. This hasn't been the case with Ampyra. Data from ITG's proprietary physician panel have pointed to waning demand for Ampyra, which the study concludes is unlikely to improve without material changes to the drug's reimbursement situation.

Conducted in April - May 2011, the study includes analysis of a targeted Internet survey of 100 neurologists and proprietary longitudinal treatment data from a panel of 225 neurologists spanning 2005-2011. Through triangulation of quantitative and qualitative findings from these two data sources, the report provides an in-depth look at the launch of Gilenya and the potential for future oral disease-modifying drugs in the multiple sclerosis market. In addition, the report evaluates uptake and use of Acorda Therapeutics' Ampyra as a supportive agent in the MS space.

Price KO For Customers As Energy Companies Hike Bills.

(PRWEB) May 12, 2011

Consumers have been hit by a series of fresh blows after energy companies increased prices and pulled a string of cheap deals.

The independent price comparison service Energyhelpline.com said the latest developments were evidence of the mounting market pressure on the Big Six suppliers to raise their prices.

Today (May 9) npower withdrew its Go Fix 5 cheapest fixed tariff for new customers replacing it with Go Fix 6 which is 4.2% more expensive for gas and 8.5% more expensive for electricity.

This followed a move by British Gas on Friday (May 6) which ended the cheapest online deal for new customers -- the 'WebSaver 11' at [pounds sterling]895 a year -- and replaced it with 'Websaver 11+ One Off Repairs' which is [pounds sterling]36 a year more expensive at [pounds sterling]931 but also includes emergency repair cover.

In addition, smaller providers First Utility, Ovo, Green Energy have all raised standard tariffs in the past 10 days. This will make it not only more difficult for householders to keep within a budget for their energy supplies but in these straightened economic times it will be a growing element of a company's operating costs as they have to accommodate increases in business electricity prices.

Energyhelpline.com warned in April of price rises of up to 15% by the autumn but said that smaller rises could actually kick in before then because of pressure on wholesale prices and from investors for higher profits. Already 3 smaller suppliers have now raised standard prices.

Mark Todd, director of Energyhelpline.com, said: "The cheaper deals are being pulled so quickly that it is difficult to keep up. We are now seeing very real evidence of price rises across the domestic energy market.

"Over the past month, there has been a bonfire of some of the best deals on the market. The outlook is very bleak and consumers need to act quickly if they want to snap up the cheapest deals or opt for a fixed rate tariff which will protect them from further price rises.

"Times are hard generally and they are about to get harder as the cost of domestic power spirals relentlessly upwards."

Ovo announced today (May 9) it was raising its standard variable rate from June 9 with Green Energy UK increasing the price of its Pale Green tariff by 3.9% and Deep Green by 1.4%. First Utility has introduced a 7.3% rise for gas and 11% on electricity on Smart as Standard v1 which came into effect over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend.

The latest round of bad news for customers came as British Gas owner Centrica on Monday warned Britons to brace themselves for higher energy bills this winter.

The company said wholesale gas and electric prices have risen by a quarter compared with last year after unrest in the Middle East and the Japan nuclear catastrophe.

Todd said: "Centrica is clearly firing a shot across the bows of consumers that residential energy bills are very likely to rise. British Gas is the biggest player in the UK market and if it is feeling the pressure to increase prices then you can be certain that the other members of the Big Six are in the same boat.

"I am afraid that all the evidence at our disposal indicates that millions of customers are going to have to stump up more for their power bills as the year progresses.

"If people are on a standard tariff they should get off it now and switch to a low-cost fix or internet tariff.

"There are still some good value long fixed rate tariffs left such as EDF's Fixed S@ver v2 which has a typical saving of [pounds sterling]141 a year and offers a fixed price until October 2012."

About SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM

WWW.SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM is a service designed to help bonafide shareholders of publicly traded US companies fight short selling. SqueezeTrigger.com has built a proprietary database that uses Threshold list feeds and short sale time and sale data from NASDAQ, AMEX and NYSE to generate detailed and useful information to combat the short selling problem. For the first time, actual trade by trade data is available to the public that shows the attempted size, actual size, price and average value of short sales in stocks that have been shorted. This information is valuable in determining the precise point at which short sellers go out-of-the-money and start losing on their short trades.

SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM has built a massive database that collects, analyzes and publishes a proprietary SqueezeTrigger for each stock that has been shorted. The SqueezeTrigger database of nearly one billion short sale transactions goes back to January 1, 2005 and calculates the exact price at which the Total Short Interest is short in each stock. This data was never before available prior to January 1, 2005 because the Self Regulatory Organizations (primary exchanges) guarded it aggressively. After the SEC passed Regulation SHO, exchanges were forced to allow data processors like SqueezeTrigger.com to access the data.

The SqueezeTrigger database collects individual short trade data on over 7,000 NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ stocks and general short trade data on nearly 8,000 OTCBB and PINKSHEET stocks. Each month the database grows by approximately 50,000,000 short sale transactions and provides investors with the knowledge necessary to time when to buy and sell stocks with outstanding short positions. By tracking the size and price of each monthc-' short transactions, SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM provides institutions, traders, analysts, journalists and individual investors the exact price point where short sellers start losing money and a short squeeze can begin.

Alcohol advertising reaching too many teens on cable TV, researchers say.

A new study from the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth, in collaboration with UCLA, has found a striking correlation between teenage viewership and the frequency of alcohol advertising on cable television. The findings show that ads for beer, spirits and "alcopop" aired much more frequently when more teens were watching.

While previous studies have shown that the average adolescent is exposed to well over 200 alcohol ads on television each year, this is the first to demonstrate an association between ad placement and teen cable TV viewership. Cable TV attracts about 95 percent of all nationally televised alcohol ads.

The study will be published in the October issue of the American Journal of Public Health and is currently available online by subscription.

"Alcohol advertisers have pledged to avoid audiences made up of more than 30 percent underage viewers - such as children's programming," said David H. Jernigan, director of the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth and an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "However, many other shows have adolescent appeal. This research suggests that ads are aimed at groups that include a disproportionate number of teens and that the alcohol industry's voluntary self-monitoring is not working to reduce adolescent exposure to ads."

Using advertising industry data from Nielsen Media Research, researchers examined all 600,000 national cable alcohol ads shown from 2001 through 2006 to audiences with less than 30 percent of viewers between the ages of 12 and 20. Among the findings:

Audiences with a higher percentage of youth between the ages of 12 and 20 were exposed to a higher frequency of alcohol ads, even after accounting for other factors that might explain ad placement decisions. Each 1-percentage-point increase in adolescent viewership was associated with a 7-percent increase in beer ads, a 15-percent increase in spirits ads and a 22-percent increase in ads for low-alcohol refreshers/alcopops - flavored alcoholic beverages that taste similar to juice or soda. In contrast, wine ads decreased by 8 percent with each 1-percentage-point increase in adolescent viewership; this finding suggests that alcohol advertisers can, in fact, successfully avoid adolescent audiences.

"This study did not examine whether alcohol advertisers are intentionally overexposing adolescents," said lead study author Dr. Paul J. Chung, assistant professor of pediatrics at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA and a senior natural scientist at the RAND Corp. "The alcohol industry has consistently denied actively targeting teens, and our study isn't designed to test that claim. However, the ultimate effect of their advertising strategies, intentional or not, appears to be greater exposure than might be expected if adults were the sole targets of ads."

For years, alcohol has been the substance of abuse most commonly used by teens in the United States, and the public health consequences of underage drinking are considerable. Numerous studies and national statistics report that adolescents are involved in a significant proportion of the injuries, violence and crime that stem from binge drinking and other forms of alcohol abuse. Moreover, studies have shown that starting to drink as an adolescent has been linked with much greater risks of lifelong problem drinking.

Multiple studies suggest that alcohol ads can have substantial influence on underage drinking attitudes and behaviors.

"It's difficult to document experimentally," said Chung, who also directs the UCLA-RAND Center for Adolescent Health Promotion. "But there's not too much doubt that advertising and marketing affect the behavior of both children and adults. Common sense tells us that if it didn't work, companies probably wouldn't be spending so much money on it. So, it's a lot harder for parents, teachers and clinicians to successfully encourage kids to delay drinking when so many things they're seeing - on television, on billboards, on movie screens, on the Internet - are telling them otherwise."

Panasas Extends High-Performance Parallel Storage to Windows HPC Customers.

Panasas DirectFLOW(R) Client Software on Microsoft Windows Cluster Compute Server to Increase Flexibility and Productivity for Users

FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Panasas, Inc., the leader in parallel clustered storage solutions for the High Performance Computing (HPC) market, today announced that it is working to provide the benefits of Panasas ActiveStor Parallel Storage Clusters to the Microsoft Windows Cluster Compute Server (CCS) platform. Panasas will port its DirectFLOW(R) protocol and client software to the Microsoft Windows CCS platform, enabling users in the energy, manufacturing, financial services, life sciences, government and academic markets to increase flexibility and productivity by deploying mixed Linux and Windows clusters with common high performance storage.

Panasas ActiveStor Parallel Storage Clusters have been deployed in Microsoft environments using the Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol for many years. The Panasas DirectFLOW protocol, used by the award-winning Panasas PanFS(TM) parallel file system, enables full parallel data transfers for larger scale simulation and modeling applications commonly found in HPC applications and brings new levels of performance, scalability, manageability and productivity to the Windows HPC community.

"Our larger customers demand a production-ready, high-end parallel storage solution that can consolidate all their data into a single pool of shared storage," said Shawn Hansen, director of HPC product marketing at Microsoft. "The combination of Panasas ActiveStor Parallel Storage Clusters and the Microsoft Windows CCS environment will provide HPC users a proven solution with new flexibility to deploy mixed Linux and Windows clusters with common high performance storage."

Windows CCS provides customers with a simplified deployment and management experience, offers easy integration with existing Windows infrastructures, and enables customers to leverage their existing development skills using Microsoft Visual Studio(R). Microsoft Windows CCS brings together the power of commodity x64 (64-bit x86) computers, the ease of use and security of Active Directory directory, and the Windows operating system to provide a security-enhanced and affordable HPC solution.

"Panasas is pleased to provide native support for our Parallel Storage Clusters on Windows CCS," said Len Rosenthal, chief marketing officer at Panasas. "Microsoft has become a significant player in the HPC community and as the number of larger-scale CCS deployments has increased, particularly in financial and CAE applications, so has the demand for a scalable, production-proven, high-performance parallel storage solution that is optimized for Microsoft CCS. Ease of use and reliability advantages of Panasas storage are key requirements that all Microsoft customers typically expect."

Panasas ActiveStor parallel storage includes the patented DirectFLOW protocol, a direct access path between cluster nodes and their storage, eliminating delays inherent in traditional SAN and NAS architectures. This approach improves IT productivity and further reduces the overall cost of ownership. Panasas storage is rack mounted, delivering up to 15 terabytes (TB) of RAID-protected storage capacity per 4U shelf. Up to 150 TB is supported in a single-rack system that can be installed in as little as 15 minutes.

Panasas currently intends to release a native version of the DirectFLOW software for Microsoft Windows CCS operating systems in late 2008.
